Metro selected H&J to provide electrical design for all Metro and Food Basic store new construction and renovation projects in Ontario. H&J was responsible for all aspects of electrical systems, including lighting, fire alarm, fixturing and refrigeration coordination, security design, low voltage design in all food preparation and E-commerce areas.

H&J is proud to be the electrical engineer for this 50,000 square feet of market place, over three floors, at 55 Bloor Street West, Manulife Centre.  The is the first-ever store in Canada for Eataly, a high-quality Italian food store.  The space consists of open kitchens, Café, restaurants, takeaway counters, shops, brewery and cooking school to showcase fine Italian foods.  H&J's scope of work included IT, lighting integration, security, and AV design.

H&J provided electrical engineering, high voltage engineering, and lighting design for this 200,00 sq. ft. pharmaceutical distribution centre, located in Milton, Ontario. This building consisted of a renovation of shell space, consisted of 10,000 sq.ft. of Class A office space c/w addressable lighting control, is fully automated with floor-to-ceiling picking equipment, and contains a Class 11 Vault for controlled substances.

H&J provided mechanical and electrical engineering, and lighting design for this 2.7 million sq. ft. fulfillment centre, located in Barrhaven, Ontario. This building, currently the largest Amazon build in Canada, is 5 storeys high, has LED lighting throughout, is fully air conditioned, and has a combination of conventional conveyance and automated robotics throughout.

H&J provided mechanical and electrical engineering, high voltage engineering, and lighting design for this 1 million sq. ft. fulfillment centre in Scarborough Ontario. The building has LED lighting throughout, is fully air conditioned, has conventional conveyance along with robotic pickers and a 400,000 sq.ft manual mezzanine pick area.

Construction of a new, 570,000 sqft state of the art automated storage distribution center including approximately 20,000 sqft of administration and supporting office space. This warehouse consisted of 80’ clear ceiling facility utilizes energy efficient LED fixtures throughout the interior and exterior of the facility. H&J electrical and mechanical engineering included customer-owned medium voltage transformers and switchgear, HVAC , plumbing, dimmable site and warehouse lighting and approximately 4.5 MW of electrical vehicle charging.

Construction of a new, 300,000 sq.ft. fully-automated refrigerated distribution center including approximately 20,000 sq.ft. of administration and supporting office space, on a greenfield site. The warehouse portion consisted of 75’ high ceiling and utilizes energy efficient LED fixtures throughout the interior and exterior of the facility. H&J electrical and mechanical engineering included customer-owned medium voltage transformers and switchgear, HVAC , plumbing, dimmable site and warehouse lighting and approximately 3MW of electrical vehicle charging.

Construction of 250,000 sq.ft. warehouse/freezer and cooler space. This 250,000 sq.ft. 75’ clear high ceiling facility utilizes energy efficient LED fixtures throughout the interior and exterior of the facility. Approximately 230,000 sq.ft of warehouse features isolated wet freezer/cooler and staging area with dry and cold docks totaling 58 loading bays. A ground floor office of 20,000 sq.ft. connecting both new and existing building at the new main-entrance finalizes the project. H&J provided electrical engineering for Medium and Low voltage, power quality design and engineering, emergency systems and lighting design.

Project consisted of the construction of a 210,000 sq.ft., automated freezer distribution center including 16,000 sq.ft. of administration and supporting office space. The warehouse portion has 75’ clear height facility utilizes energy efficient LED fixtures throughout the interior and exterior of the facility. Site works consisted of a new customer-owned MV substation, EV chargers and various site electrical for reefer plugs and block heaters.

Construction of 294,000 sq.ft., 75’ high, state-of-the-art automated, refrigerated distribution center including 5,000 sq.ft. of operations/maintenance and 20,000 sq.ft. of administration and supporting office space. Due to the limited available site space, this project also included for a 96,000 sqft underground parking structure. This facility utilizes energy efficient LED fixtures throughout the interior and exterior of the facility. Site works consisted of a new customer-owned MV substation, EV chargers and various site electrical for reefer plugs and block heaters.

H&J provide Mechanical, Electrical and Fire protection engineering services, as well as energy modeling for this 10 acres multi-tower residential development for Menkes. As part of the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre master plan, This develop including three midrise towers (750 units) on top of a 10 acre below grade parking garage. As well H&J designed mechanical and electrical services to feed the 397 townhouse units situated on the site.

Construction of approximately 120,000 sq. ft. two level state-of-the-art office, industrial and training facility, that is  being utilized by many groups of the  Canadian military including 36 Signals Regiment, 33 Medical Platoon, Princess Louise Fusiliers, and CFB Halifax Supply Detachment. This building is located on a declared National Historic Site, as of 1989. Hammerschlag and Joffe provided a complete electrical design for all of the site and building services, including high voltage, emergency systems, lighting (indoor and outdoor), CCTV security and audio visual infrastructure. Building was constructed to LEED Silver standards which includes high efficiency lighting and controls.

H&J provided electrical engineering services for these urban townhomes in London, Ontario. The project consists of 11 blocks of buildings with a total of 87 townhomes in a brand new community by Sifton. The focus of this project is on sustainable design and taking a leadership role in the movement towards a fully-immersed, SMART, eco-friendly lifestyle.

H&J provided electrical engineering services for this boutique residence in The Beaches area of Toronto. The project consists of a low level six-storey building with 28 residential units and retail on the ground floor. Unique design for this project included a turntable elevator for vehicles and a compact customer-owned hydro substation.

H&J provided electrical engineering services for this luxury twin tower condominium project in Waterloo, Ontario. The project consists of a common podium with 350 units of high-rise condominium suites and townhomes – designed and constructed in two phases.

H&J provided electrical engineering services for this mixed-use condominium for Reserve Properties Limited completed in collaboration with Graziani + Corazza Architects and TMG Builders. The project consists of 87 residential units and 12,500 square feet of retail in the heart of Toronto’s Art & Design district.

H&J provided electrical, communication and lighting design services for this revitalization project in one of Toronto’s landmark buildings, Manulife Centre. The project added 30,000 square feet of retail space on the podium level while providing a refresh of the streetscape and the public realm. Major upgrades to this 1970’s mixed-use building included a new 800KW generator plant, a new base building network and sophisticated LED lighting for the key entrances.

H&J provided electrical engineering services for this mixed-use building on rezoned land for RioCan Management Inc. Located on Toronto’s Dupont Street, the project consists of 210 residential units and 33,000 square feet of retail space. H&J also served as the electrical engineer for the anchor retail tenant – a major grocery store.

H&J provided electrical engineering design services for the construction of a new 4-storey 100,000 sq. ft. office and attached 100,000 sq. ft. warehouse. This facility included full office fit out of the interior space as well as power and communication infrastructure for all the equipment throughout the warehouse.

H&J provided electrical engineering design services for the construction of a new residential/commercial and retail mixed-use space complete with four levels of above-grade parking deck. The facility consisted of a two-level retail/office podium, 8-storey office tower and a 9-storey condo building. Retail and office spaces were equipped with power/lighting infrastructure to accommodate the future tenants. The condominium portion of the building included a complete interior fit out and outdoor amenity space.

H&J provided electrical and security engineering design services for the construction of a new 4-storey, 150,000 sq. ft. mixed-use office/retail space complete with three levels of underground parking in the city’s downtown for RioCan Real Estate Investment Trust. The scope of work included a customer-owned high voltage sub-station as well as electrical infrastructure throughout the tenancies and security design for the common space.

H&J provided electrical engineering design services for the renovation and conversion of an existing office building to accommodate retail tenants in the first two floors for First Capital Realty. The scope of work included a full electrical service upgrade as well as voltage conversion of the existing building. As part of the project the mechanical penthouse equipment was replaced and a new life-safety generator was added.

H&J provided electrical and lighting engineering design services for the renovation of the existing mall for Cushman & Wakefield. The scope of work included mall common areas lighting upgrade as well as washroom renovations.

H&J provided lighting design and electrical engineering design services which included a total of 20,000 square feet renovation of office space in downtown Toronto. This project included lighting new fashion studio spaces as well as product showrooms.

H&J provided lighting design and electrical engineering design services which included a total of 24,000 square feet renovation of office space in downtown Toronto. The goal of the design was to compliment the historic wood frame architectural structure of the building with the needs of a modern office.

H&J provided electrical engineering design services for the revitalization and expansion of the Square One Shopping Centre in downtown Mississauga for Oxford Properties. The project was divided over multiple phases beginning in 2012, including a 150,000 sq. ft. expansion, 300,000 sq. ft. two-level parking garage and High Voltage infrastructure upgrade. This design included the implementation of Oxford’s Properties first DALI lighting control system in a retail centre. A network of over 40 High Voltage switches was upgraded and replaced as part of this project providing the property with multiple redundancies on their high voltage feeds to the building. Our team collaborated and coordinaed with the local utility and the City Council on all infrastructure upgrades and site works throughout the project phases. H&J assisted in the development of new pedestrian scale lighting on the exterior with Oxford Properties and the City.

H&J provided lighting design and electrical engineering design services which included a total of 15,000 square feet of office space in downtown Toronto. The goal of the design was to compliment the fantastic lake view as well as feature the office from the ground floor atrium.

H&J provided electrical engineering as well as other design services for this 410,000 sq. ft. distribution facility, located in Surrey, British Columbia. The distribution centre has over 8 differing temperature gradients throughout the various interior areas, while the exterior of the building, due to proximity to various neighbourhoods, was designed to meet local guidelines and urban mandates. The building was designed to LEED silver certification.

H&J provided electrical engineering and other design services for the Yorkdale Shopping Centre for the past 15 years including a wide array of projects: mall expansions, interior renovations and electrical systems upgrades. On top of the various expansions and renovations, we upgraded the existing lighting to LED, provided a full distributed fiber communications network, VOIP phone system, full WI-FI coverage, state-of-the-art security system, including CCTV, LPR cameras and access controls. It is also one of the first retail developments to provide Tesla charging stations. As the mall continues to grow and develop, all work is completed while the mall continues to operate as one of the leading retail destinations in Canada.

H&J provided electrical engineering design for this open air concept shopping centre located in Toronto since its construction in 2009. The original development was situated on top of the existing mall and included a new 2-storey office building, 12 retail buildings, and interconnection to the existing 6 storey office situated on the site, and 4 level above grade parkade. The buildings are centred around a park and communal area complete with fountain and skating rink in the winter. The property fire alarm was specially designed as a ‘campus style’ system and interconnected the various stand-alone buildings together. The original mall construction occurred at the beginning of the LED lighting era and included first generation LED lighting throughout.

H&J provided electrical engineering, high voltage and lighting design for the renovation and expansion of the existing Sherway Gardens. This $550 million project included a new food court in the expansion area, totalling 210,000 sq. ft., redevelopment of the existing Sears area and redevelopment of all existing mall common corridors. H&J also re-engineered the entire electrical infrastructure, upgrading from the existing 120/208V distribution to a new 347/600V system to serve both the new and existing areas of the mall, including HV distribution in coordination with Toronto Hydro. Three new above grade parking garages were also completed, including a wireless vehicle counting and wayfinding system.

H&J provided electrical engineering, as well as other design services, for this one million sq. ft. distribution centre, including fully fit out offices, dry, refrigerated and freezer sections, and remote reclaim/maintenance facility for the vehicle/truck maintenance. The project was split into three phases due to size and complexity; Phase 1 included the refrigerated/produce sections of the warehouse areas plus the office/staff areas, Phase 2 included the dry goods, and Phase 3 included the freezer portion of the warehouse.

H&J provided electrical engineering services for this student residence complex consisting of 475 suites within two 6-storey buildings. The ground floors of each building include amenity as well as retail spaces. H&J were heavily involved in redistribution of the university campus infrastructure located below the project area to allow for this construction, as well as to allow for planned future expansion of the residences.

H&J provided the electrical engineering for this 60 unit residential building including a below grade parking level. As a home for residents of varying levels of special needs, the facility’s ground floor has multiple amenity spaces catering to special needs programs for both residents and members of the community.

H&J provided the electrical engineering services for this retail development located in Markham, Ontario. The facility includes 300,000 square feet of retail space spread over two 3-story buildings, connected by a bridge and including a 2,400 cinema and a single below grade level of parking.

H&J provided electrical engineering services for this 220,000 square foot community centre located in Vaughan. The facility includes a fitness and health centre complete with pool, daycare, medical offices, social service office and education facilities.

H&J provided electrical engineering services for this 80,000 square foot sports complex which included two (2) indoor lacrosse rinks, practice and gym facilities and meeting space. The facility was designed for the Toronto Rock professional lacrosse team as their main practice facility, and is also used for other professional/amateur teams including baseball, rugby and soccer training.

H&J provided electrical engineering, lighting design and high voltage design services for the 250,000 square foot expansion of the existing Sobeys warehouse located in Vaughan, Ontario. The expansion included ambient, refrigerated and freezer sections.

H&J provided electrical engineering for the retail component of this mixed-use development in Ottawa as well as the lighting design for the development’s internal roadways. Spanning 5 buildings, a total of 360,000 square feet of retail space were built including a full cinema, gym, grocery store and multiple restaurants. H&J also provided electrical engineering for the fit out of the 42,000 square foot Whole Foods, and 42,000 square foot Sporting Life.

H&J provided electrical engineering service for the conversion of Maple Leaf Gardens to a mixed-use complex including a below grade parking level, 85,000 square foot Loblaws grocery store (including full fit out) and base building infrastructure for a multi-level athletics facility for Ryerson University including the home of their varsity hockey and basketball teams. The original 1931 building façade, roof and rafters were all kept, and featured as part of the renovation to ensure the rich history of the building was not lost.

H&J provided electrical engineering and lighting design for this 3 level LEED CI mall in downtown Calgary which included 567,000 square feet of gross leasable area. The development included properties on three separate city blocks joined together by above grade building connections and a continuous frameless glass skylight. To allow for the interconnection of three separate buildings, H&J developed a fire alarm sequence to meet the requirements of the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).

H&J provided electrical engineering design services for this new single storey 129,000 sq. ft. flagship Hudson’s Bay Company store in La Salle, Quebec. The store was non-prototypical, with the lighting design being a key element in delivering a successful project. It is the first ‘new’ Hudson’s Bay store location in almost 15 years.

H&J provided electrical engineering design services for this new two- storey 150,000 square foot office building for SmartCentres. The project included all site works, partial basement parking area, emergency generator with capacity for the IT systems and the full tenant fit-up. The building also included a squash court and helicopter pad.   

H&J provided electrical and lighting engineering design services for the renovation and expansion of the existing mall for Ivanhoe Cambridge. The scope of work included a 150,000 sq. ft. addition and existing mall lighting upgrades. H&J worked with the designers to illuminate large custom features which were added throughout the existing and new mall areas.

H&J provided electrical and lighting engineering design services for the renovation and expansion of the existing mall for Ivanhoe Cambridge. The scope of work included an alarm system upgrade and expansion into the over 300,000 sq. ft. addition. The existing mall common areas were redesigned and lighting was upgraded to LED. The new area consisted of a large food court, new washrooms, underground parking garage and retail units. The incoming power and communications were rerouted and expanded. Natural gas generators were added to power the previous battery-powered emergency lighting.

H&J provided electrical, lighting design and communications engineering design services for the renovation of the existing Rock Garden Centre, including the addition of a visitor centre. The site consisted of illuminated pathways through woods with a man-made waterfall and stream, culminating in an illuminated pond. The visitor centre is an architectural jewel designed by CS&P Architects to echo the shape of a leaf. The award-winning lighting component was designed to complement the structure and create mood and impact both during the day and night.

H&J provided lighting design and electrical engineering design services for the renovation of the ground floor and basement of this prominent office tower in downtown Ottawa. The renovation included a new food court, grand entrance lobby, upgrades to the common corridors and elevator lobbies, new retail tenants and washrooms. In addition, the voice communication fire alarm system was replaced throughout this 27 floor,1 million+ square foot office tower. The construction was completed in many phases as the building remained occupied during the entire construction period.

H&J provided electrical engineering design services for this new six storey, 150,000 square foot office building for First Gulf. The project was designed to meet LEED Silver and included all site works, emergency generator with capacity for use by the tenant and the fit-up of the tenant Siemens who occupied the entire building. The ground floor included a display area for Siemens to display their iconic products, and a custom lighting scheme was implemented to present them with impact.   

H&J provided electrical engineering design services for this new six storey, 150,000 square foot office building for First Gulf. The project was designed to meet LEED Silver and included all site works, including emergency generator with capacity for use by the tenants and the fit-up of the major tenant, PWC.

H&J provided electrical engineering and lighting design services for this 30,000 sq. ft. interior office fit-out at the Canadian Tire Bolton Distribution Centre. This office was designed to not only service the warehouse but to provide the employees with a sense that they were staying in a comparable Class A office space. The interior fit-out also won an IES interior lighting award.

H&J is providing electrical engineering, lighting, security and IT design services for this massive 100 acre mixed-use development. The entire site is projected to be in construction for over 5 years across multiple phases. When all phases are complete, Trinity Hills is projected to have over 950,000 sq. ft. of commercial space, 1,500 residential units and create more than 2,000 jobs.

H&J provided electrical engineering and lighting design services for this multi-use complex which included four separate commercial buildings totalling 210,000 sq. ft. constructed over a two level underground parking garage. Various tenants include a major grocery chain, gymnasium, various banks and two different oil and gas companies. The facility also boasted a cogeneration plant installed to serve the entire complex.

H&J provided electrical engineering and high voltage design services for both 1.3 million square foot Regional Distribution Centres (in Milton/Cornwall) for Target Canada. Both fully automated facilities were constructed simultaneously with different contractors but the same substantial date. 

H&J provided electrical engineering and lighting design for this state-of-the-art precast parking garage, including over 1,600 parking spaces. To ensure a premium shopping experience, this above grade parkade includes a heated, ramped parking management system and an overhead covered walkway that spans from the garage to the facility.

H&J provided electrical engineering, high voltage engineering, and lighting design for this 1.5 million sq. ft. LEED certified distribution centre in Bolton Ontario. The building has LED lighting throughout, and is fully automated, including a tire gantry area and self-driving forklifts throughout the facility. H&J’s electrical design includes a full processing on-site hydrogen station, which will eventually feed the majority of the centre’s mobile MHE equipment.

H&J provided electrical services for this multi-facility site for Home Depot. Totalling 1.1 million square feet, this site includes a fully-automated Rapid Distribution Centre, and a standard fully-racked Stocking Distribution Centre, which serves all of Western Canada’s Home Depot stores.

H&J provided high voltage, electrical and lighting engineering design services for this 1.5 million square foot distribution centre for the Canadian Tire Corporation. As the project required a fast-track schedule, H&J engaged three separate electrical contractors to ensure successful completion. At the time of construction, this was the largest warehouse constructed in one phase.

H&J provided electrical engineering design services for the revitalization of the existing Rideau Centre in downtown Ottawa for Cadillac Fairview. The project included a 550,000 S.F. expansion to the existing centre over 4 levels of above grade retail and 3 levels of below grade parking. The scope of work included for provisions for access to the future Ottawa LRT (Light Rail Transit) and a phased approach to ensure the centre remained opened to shoppers during the renovation.

H&J provided communications and electrical engineering design services which included a total of 190,000 square feet of retail space over 3 floors on behalf of Osmington Inc., the head lessee for Union Station, the largest transit hub in downtown Toronto. The space includes a new food court and food market on the lower level, with various restaurant and retail tenants throughout the station. Construction was phased to accommodate the City of Toronto’s demanding schedule while ensuring full operation of the station during construction.

H&J provided electrical, lighting and communications engineering design services for the renovation and expansion of the existing mall for Cushman Wakefield. The scope of work included both mall common areas and retail tenant space, as well as the world’s largest double-glass spherical structural skylight, which included high-end fire alarm and lighting systems to ensure the safety of the building occupants and aesthetics of this new Mississauga landmark.

A new 380,000 sq. ft. expansion and 280,000 sq. ft. renovation to an existing Shoppers Drug Mart distribution facility. Expansion is 90’ high and complete with Witron automated racking system.

H&J provided electrical engineering design, lighting design, IT/security design services to this heritage house located in the prestigious Yorkville neighbourhood in Toronto.  The Webster is a Miami-based luxury multi brand retailer.  The store area is about 6,500 square feet over three level.
